Originally planned to reopen in early 2020, delays occurred due to public health problems. Now the reopening of Carnavalet Museum is tentatively scheduled for end April, 2021.
The vast collections include circa 615, 000 artefacts, comprising paintings, furniture, decorative art, medals, posters, archeological objects as well as architectural details. The two historic mansions, Carnavalet and Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau plus inner courtyards constitute the museum situated in the heart of the Marais in Paris.

Valerie Guillaume, director of the museum, oversaw the rigorous evaluation and restoration of the collections, while drawing up a complete inventory. The collections are now housed in three big storage spaces equipped with the latest of conservation techniques, of which one is temporary. Restoration of decorative pieces such as huge reliefs and murals are also included.
The museum director is assisted by François Chatillon, head of François Chatillon Agency, official architect-in-chief of historic monuments of France (whose work included the restoration of the Grand Palais amongst others), together with the Norwegian Agency Snohetta and Nathalie Crinière, specialist in museum scenography comprising exhibition and space design. Films and interactive tools will be installed for visitors, while a library containing books about historical subjects pertaining to the history of Paris is also foreseen.

The artefacts will be displayed in rotating special exhibitions after the reopening. The permanent display space covers 3900 sqm, while 360 sqm is dedicated to temporary shows. Gardens and courtyards take up 2400 sqm and 600 sqm are reserved for cultural activities. 10% of the displays will be situated at children’s height, while a novel thematic layout for visitors circulating around the museum has been given much thought.
Budget and Financing of Project

The budget allotted to the renovation of the buildings and restoration of artefacts totals 50 Million €. 44 Million € is covered by a subvention of the City of Paris, subventions of the Ministeries of Culture and of the Region of Ile de France. The remaining sum is covered by coporate sponsorship of La Caisse d’Epargne d’Ile de France, the Fondation Engie and FREE. The budget also covers general costs involved.

Carnavalet Museum dedicated to the history of the City of Paris, is situated at 16, Rue des Francs Bourgeois, 75003 Paris, but as finishing touches are still being undertaken, more specific details about ticketing and opening hours are not yet available.
